Synopsis (Goodreads):
Charlotte Enright, owner of a small antiques shop called Looking Glass Antiques on Rainshadow Island, and Slade Attridge, the community's new chief of police, both have something in common: they possess strong paranormal talents.

They met several years ago when they were in their teens spending the summer on the island. Slade saved Charlotte from a gang of drunken toughs, but then at the end of the summer Slade and Charlotte went their separate ways and started their adult lives.

Now, fifteen years later, they have both been drawn back to Rainshadow Island. They will discover the adult passion they have for each other and start to explore some of the mysteries of the forbidden section of the island known only as the Preserve.
Thoughts on Canyons of Night: (Not related to the review, but DANG there are a lot of series connected to this title. It's time to read ALL THE BOOKS!)

I read this book out of order in the Rainshadow series, so I've seen how devoted Slade and Charlotte are to both the island and to one another as they work on maintaining peace and keeping the dangerous things caged in the Preserve. BUT...it was neat seeing the Preserve before it went super hot and started doing all the weirdness we get to see down the road. Here, it's really just a spooky piece of real estate where sometimes bad things happen. Later? It's even more dangerous.

But that's not in the here and now, is it? Let's talk about Slade and Charlotte and how they fit in on Rainshadow. Slade's returned to the island as the chief of police and he's...well, he's not really intending this to be a long term gig. Charlotte, on the other hand, has settled into her aunt's antique shop and she's planning on sticking around. In other words, these two don't seem like they'd fit all that well, but BOY are they a good match.

Mostly because the deeper Slade digs into what's happening on the island and the more time he spends with Charlotte, the less he wants to leave. Plus, Charlotte's talent gives him some insight into what's going on with his own.

A little danger, a jaunt or two into the beautiful and strange Preserve, strong talent, clockwork curiosities, and a dust bunny who's ready to rumble. Well, rumble and carry around an evening clutch. Heh. Man, I like those dust bunnies. *thumbs up*
