Synopsis (Goodreads):
A painter of fiery, nightmarish visions throws herself into the sea—but she leaves her secrets behind . . .

Seattle gallery owner Virginia Troy has spent years battling the demons that stem from her childhood time in a cult and the night a fire burned through the compound, killing her mother. And now one of her artists has taken her own life, but not before sending Virginia a last picture: a painting that makes Virginia doubt everything about the so-called suicide—and her own past.

Like Virginia, private investigator Cabot Sutter was one of the children in the cult who survived that fire... and only he can help her now. As they struggle to unravel the clues in the painting, it becomes clear that someone thinks Virginia knows more than she does and that she must be stopped. Thrown into an inferno of desire and deception, Virginia and Cabot draw ever closer to the mystery of their shared memories—and the shocking fate of the one man who still wields the power to destroy everything they hold dear.
Thoughts on Promise Not to Tell: We're back with the second of the three boys Anson saved the night of the cult fire and Cabot's match is another survivor. Which works nicely because Virginia understands where Cabot's quirks and drive to figure out the truth comes from. It probably doesn't need to be said, but Virginia wasn't left entirely unscathed from what happened at the cult. So, yeah. Both of them have some baggage. That said, they've both managed to find work arounds and coping mechanisms for dealing with said baggage.

On top of all the stuff from the past, they're also dealing with a case that, uhh, well, it kinda stirs up the past. Their past, to be exact. Because Virginia's artist friend was also involved in the cult and she took her secrets to the grave. Mostly. So Cabot and Virginia are unraveling the mystery a clue at a time and uncovering some things that made a parts of the puzzle of Quinton Zane snap into place.

This sounds very convoluted. It is and it isn't. Let's just say that Cabot's conspiracy theories (and those of Anson and his brothers) are starting to make a surprising amount of sense and they're getting closer to finding out the truth about a lot of things. All while connecting with the person who fits with them in the best sort of way. NICE!

A fire or two, a dangerous situation, a little steam, an unexpected body, and two people finding one another when they need it most. *thumbs up*
