Synopsis (Goodreads):
Miss Marple encounters a compelling murder mystery in the sleepy little village of St. Mary Mead, where under the seemingly peaceful exterior of an English country village lurks intrigue, guilt, deception and death.Thoughts on The Murder at the Vicarage: We're switching gears (from the abundance of Poirot books I've been reading) and heading into the small town of St. Mary Mead where Miss Marple resides. As it happens, Miss Marple's house is right next to the vicarage where a body has recently been found. Small towns, man. They're dangerous places to live.
Colonel Protheroe, local magistrate and overbearing land-owner is the most detested man in the village. Everyone--even in the vicar--wishes he were dead. And very soon he is--shot in the head in the vicar's own study. Faced with a surfeit of suspects, only the inscrutable Miss Marple can unravel the tangled web of clues that will lead to the unmasking of the killer.
Anywho. The vicar is understandable perplexed by said dead body. While he knows who he is and there are plenty of suspects who might have wanted to do him in, the fact the crime was committed in his study is the perplexing part. Fortunately, Miss Marple and her keen eye for details are around to help guide him (and the police) in the right direction.
As the vicar and police work through the clues (and suspects), Miss Marple is out gathering her own clues. She might know who did the deed, but she has to figure out the hows and whys before she's comfortable letting everyone else in on it.
A solid mystery with plenty of interesting small town characters. *thumbs up*
