Synopsis (Goodreads):
Even for one of the top assassins in Hell like him, Hartt’s latest contract would have been difficult enough, but there’s a complication—a beautiful, flame-haired, and dangerously tempting complication. Not only is the bewitching female a distraction he doesn’t need—she’s the competition.

Mackenzie’s life hasn’t been easy. Held captive by blood mages who murdered her family, forced to spend every day guarding her secret, and now she lands the biggest contract ever—one that would set her assassin’s guild up as one of the best in Hell—and it turns out her client hasn’t only hired her. He’s hired the top guild in Hell too. Worse, the male she’s up against is wickedly alluring, a dark elf warrior who sets her blood on fire, and the heat that sparks between them is in danger of burning her resolve to take him down to ashes.

It’s a race against time and each other to fulfil the contract by taking out one of the most dangerous men in Hell, a vampire with a name befitting of his bloody history, but who will be the one to claim victory—one of them or the King of Death?
Thoughts on Scorched by Darkness: Okay. It's the (dark-ish) elf Hartt's turn to find his special someone. Given that Fuery (Hartt's other assassinly half) has found someone to keep his darkness at bay and Hartt's struggling a bit with dealing with a similar darkness, this is definitely a good thing.

The downside? Hartt and Mackenzie are being pitted against one another in a game they aren't aware they're playing. To say these two are a wee bit antagonistic at first (because assassins aren't known for their congeniality) might be an understatement. Hartt is intrigued, but doesn't see Mackenzie as much of a threat. Whereas Mackenzie is fighting hard to respectability for her Guild and to keep her secret hidden from annoying prying eyes.

Once they stop fighting one another and start collaborating, things begin moving in the right direction. They still have speed bumps, sure, but at least they aren't actively trying to thwart one another at every turn. And once they realize the full scope of what they've been drawn into, THEY'RE ON FIRE. Sometimes literally.

Familiar faces, steamy kisses, unexpected allies, and a whole lot of satisfying fighting. I'm not saying there are a couple of demons that caught my eye during that fight, but tragic backstory and pretend indifference are my catnip, so...hey there, demons. Heeeeyyyyyy.
