Synopsis (Goodreads):
HE SAYS . . .Thoughts on Bring the Heat: This entire series has been kick-in-the-pants wild from beginning to end. But this book THIS BOOK is just a RIDE from page 1 straight on through. We got to see many MANY familiar faces and it was glorious! No lie, Annwyl's fearless rage over pretty much anything and everything that is a threat to those she considers hers has always been a favorite of mine and we got to see her doing her thing in a big way.
I, Aidan the Divine, am, well divine. My name was given to me by the Dragon Queen herself! I’m a delight! Cheerful. Charming. And a mighty warrior who is extremely handsome with a very large and well-hidden hoard of gold. I am also royal born, despite the fact that most in my family are horrendous beings that don’t deserve to live. And yet, Branwen the Awful—a low-born, no less—either tells me to shut up or, worse, ignores me completely.
SHE SAYS . . .
I’ll admit, I ignore Aidan the Divine because it annoys him. A lot. But, we have so much to do right now, I can’t worry about why he keeps staring at me, or why he always sits so close, or why he keeps looking at me like he’s thinking about kissing me. We have our nations to save and no time for such bloody foolishness . . . no matter how good Aidan looks or how long his spiked tail is. Because if we’re going to win this war before it destroys everything we love, we’ll have to face our enemies together, side by side and without distractions. But if we make it out alive, who knows what the future will hold . . .
While this is technically Aiden and Branwen's romance, this is also the final battle between the dragons and the zealots, so there's a lot going on. The zealots are horrible and heartless and they're willing to do anything for their god (or the spokesperson for their god). The dragons...want to protect their people and they children and not let the zealots continue purifying those who won't join their cause. The dragons might sometimes eat horses (HE WAS DYING ANYWAY!) and some of them might poison their way through entire castles, but they're always true to themselves (except the ones who joined the zealots, which I don't get at all).
But let's get to Brannie and Aiden's romance. Branwen is pretty clueless about all the relationship stuff. She's wicked awesome in battle, but she just doesn't see that Aiden has a thing for her. Everyone else sees it, but Brannie doesn't. Meanwhile, Aiden absolutely knows that clueing Branwen in on his feelings is going to send her running. As you might guess, it takes a while for them to get to a relationship where they BOTH know what they're doing, but they get there. Eventually.
Anywho. There's a lot going on here including but not limited to Keita poisoning people, a trip to the Eastlands, Bercelak being his glorious scowly self, Annwyl ripping out tongues, Brigida the Most Foul thumping her way through the countryside, Branwen being EXTREMELY seasick, and a few gods putting in appearances. See? A LOT.
