Synopsis (Goodreads):
Port Danby is in the middle of a scorching summer heat wave. Looking for relief from the sweltering temperatures, Lacey Pinkerton invites her newly minted boyfriend, Detective James Briggs, out for vintage movie night at the Mayfield Four Theater. It promises to be a fun evening filled with Humphrey Bogart, frosty lemon-lime drinks and, most of all, air-conditioning. But when the theater owner is found dead in his office, the classic movie date night turns into a murder investigation where the motives are plenty and the poison is suspiciously sweet.
Thoughts on Peonies and Poison: A night out on the town turns into a murder investigation when the owner of a movie theater dies. The fact that Lacey and Briggs happen to be enjoying a showing of a classic movie at the time means they're smack-dab in the center of things. Which, let's face it, doesn't really put a damper on Lacey's enjoyment of the evening. (Not that she's enjoys the murder part of it, but she does enjoying sussing out clues and figuring out who did the deed.)

There are plenty of suspects and plenty of motives to go around, but Lacey's extraordinary nose and Detective Briggs's know-how have them figuring things out. And following the clues is what keeps Lacey going. Well, that and getting to spend quality time with the hunky detective.

More murder, minimal mayhem, and more than a few classic movie references. I do enjoy following these two as they solve the crime, but they REALLY can't catch a break when it comes to downtime, can they?
