Thoughts on Shock at the Sweetheart Ball: I will admit to having a love/hate relationship with the end of a series. I hate to see a series end when I've enjoyed it as much as I've enjoyed this one, but I do love when all those loose ends get tied up. Not that there were a TON of loose ends here, but we got resolution on THINGS and YESSSS!

First off, Sunni is doing her thing and helping investigate an unexpected death. To be fair, the death might not have been THAT unexpected since the person who met their untimely end was kind of horrible. In every way. Which means there were a fair amount of suspects. While Jax is doing his official investigating, he and Sunni are comparing notes and sliding potential clues at one another for follow-up. Which is cute. Because the couple who sleuths together and all that.

That said, Sunni and Jax did hit a bit of a bump in their relationship. Of the "are things going to move forward" variety. Jax has some hang ups about Edward's presence. Sunni is a little miffed that the thought of them taking the next step seems to spook Jax. It's something they both have to deal with and they do. Eventually.

A little mysticism, a long-awaited meeting, some relationship shenanigans, and a really sweet ending. Like I said, I'm sad to say goodbye, but I'm happy with how everything turned out.

Thoughts on Hot Wolf in the Country: We're back in Moonstone Pack territory with the Alpha who fiercely controls himself and doesn't believe love is in the cards for him. BOY, is he wrong. As some backstory, Adrian's father mated with a toxic woman who stirred up multiple issues with the pack, was treacherous and conniving, and who delighted in all the chaos she caused. Adrian has valid reasons for being wary of relationships. Harper just happened to worm her way into his heart anyway.

Which isn't to say their coming together was easy. Adrian is closed off and wary. Harper keeps to herself and doesn't make friends, preferring her work to socializing. In other words, she's also closed off an wary. Given that everyone in her life has abandoned her, she also has reasons for her wariness. BUT...she's trying to open herself up to new possibilities. It's just not as easy as one might think when a person's default when things happen is to crawl into themselves so they don't get hurt.

That said, Harper has stepped out of her comfort zone by moving to Monster Island. She steps a little further out when she grudgingly agrees to upgrade the Pack infrastructure and bring them a little closer to the modern age. She takes that final step when she throws caution to the wind and decides to see where this zinging pull toward Adrian takes them. Of course, Adrian also has to throw caution to the wind in that regard, but he's battling his wolf on that one and his wolf REALLY wants to claim Harper as absolutely soon as possible.

A little tech talk, a elder council that's stuck in a rut, an Alpha who wants the best for his pack, and a lady who is calmly competent in all things (except interpersonal relationships). Wolves, YESSSSSS!

Thoughts on The Retired Assassin's Guide to Orchid Hunting: Dante and his friends are drawn into another investigation on a suspicious death when one of the prominent orchid expert in town dies during the orchid convention. Of course, the only reason they suspect foul play is because Charlie saw the deceased's spirit right after he died and he was clearly trying to tell Charlie something of importance. Something Charlie, unfortunately, didn't catch in the chaos of the moment.

Now he, Dante, and Eleanor are trying to figure out who could have killed the professor. They're hampered by the fact it looked like an accident, the suspects are only there for the convention (which isn't going to last forever), and Inspector Avery is in town. He SAYS he's on vacation, but his mere presence means they need to stay mostly within the confines of the law. Mostly.

The good news is that Eleanor and Dante are experts at working around the law. They're flexible moral stance on rules and regulations give them plenty of wiggle room in all things investigative. Also, it's possible the Inspector really IS on holiday. So, you know, maybe he'll be more of an asset than an obstacle.

Meanwhile, Dante is venturing out into entirely new territory and he's...kind of terrible at dating. Small talk, too, but that's not a surprise. Eleanor is handing out sage advice while flirting with the Inspector. Charlie is his usual sunshiny, sweet self. Who just so happens to se ghosts.

I'm REALLY enjoying this series. Watching scarily intense Dante trying to blend in is a delight. His worry over his cat, his disaster of a date, and his extreme protectiveness of his new friends is *chef's kiss*

Thoughts on Pillow Talk Killer: Full disclosure, I have a very difficult time talking myself into picking up the final book in a series. Not because I think it won't live up to the rest of the series or anything, but because I don't want to let series I've enjoyed go. So I'm patting myself on the back for convincing my unruly brain to dive in and watch it all play out.

And BOY did Anna have a lot to deal with. I mean, the PTK case has stumped the police and driven a dedicated homicide detective out of the force because not being able to catch the killer ate at him until he couldn't handle it. Nate's healed since those early days, but every time the PTK claims another victim his failure in stopping them hits him all over again.

Now PTK has come to the island and Anna is absolutely not going to sit idly by when she's 100% sure the police have arrested the wrong person. She starts following clues and her gut and puts herself in danger to find the truth.

No lie, this was a solid ending to Anna's series. She got closure on more than one front, saved the day (again!), and helped keep someone who matters to her out of prison. GOOD STUFF all around.

Thoughts on Sour Grapes: We're back in Buttercup and Lucy has stumbled over not one, but TWO bodies. Which is not really a great way to spend your time. To be fair, Lucy has the nose to figure out who did the deed, so if anyone's going to find bodies, I guess she should be the one.

So. The first body was found when some of Lucy's livestock escaped and went roaming. Her search for them brings her to a house down the way where a woman had been, uhh, ended. Not only does Lucy have to deal with the worry of her missing animals, but she has the sight of this dead lady now stuck in her head.

Leaving that case to the police (since she didn't know the lady and didn't have any stake in finding out who did it), Lucy finds a SECOND body up at the new winery. On one hand, the discovery caps off a disappointing debut of the winery's wines. On the other hand, maybe the two deaths are related? Possibly? Regardless, Lucy is invested now and she's putting her investigative skills to use as she attempts to ferret out the whos and whys of these two deaths.

A sweet little pup, a move forward in the romance department, a wedding (not Lucy's!), secrets, a twisted plan, lots of wine, and one lady who is determined to piece together the clues until she figures out what's what. *thumbs up*

Which isn't unexpected, exactly, given what these two have dealt with in the past, but this was supposed to be a relaxing trip where Sin got to visit with an old friend and Jayne got to sample some delicious New Orleans food before the two of them headed back to the North Pole to wait on the arrival of their wee one.

Then a friend of Sin's friend (and someone the couple have recently met) commits suicide and both Jayne and Sin have reservations about it actually being suicide. So they quietly start looking into it. Because that's what they do.

Complicating things are some local break-ins and a little case of blackmail. On the plus side, Birdie manages to pull some strings (because that lady is CONNECTED!) and soon Jayne and Sin are meeting with the local police chief to help put the pieces of this case together.

A little danger, some shifty individuals, more than one excellent meal, and two supernatural individuals who can't let injustice lie.

Thoughts on Mystified in Music City: Taking place a couple of months after the holiday events in Nocturne Falls, Jayne and Sinclair are now making a visit to Nashville. While they're technically there to visit the toy store and spread some goodwill, Sinclair's DELIGHTED to be spending time indulging in his love of all things Elvis (which is slightly less than his love of all things Jayne, but STILL).

As you might expect, things don't go exactly as the happy couple planned. Mostly because a restless spirit needs a little help figuring out who ended him. Seeing as how said spirit remembers very little of his last moments, Jayne and Sin have to work to piece together what happened and figure out who the guilty individual might be.

A little country music love (on Sin's part), a whole lot of food enjoyment (on Jayne's part), more than a few suspicious folks, some deep diving, some intuitive leaps, and a whole lot of Elvis impersonating. It's always fun spending time solving crime with Jayne and Sin!

Thoughts on Wrapped Up in Christmas: Jayne and Sinclair are back in Nocturne Falls to help at the toy store during the Christmas season and THINGS are afoot. Some of those things are decidedly Christmassy and some are VERY MUCH NOT.

On the Christmassy side, Jayne is filling in for one of the workers at the toyshop so they can deal with a family emergency. It isn't hard for her to fall into old work routines and spend time with her friends in Nocturne Falls. She and Sin have a sweet camper to go home to at night and all the sweets she can handle.

On the non-Christmassy side, a series of break-ins around town have the NFPD stumped. As a whole, the break-ins bother Jayne and Sin because who would want to ruin Christmas? As an official North Pole delegate (and Santa's niece), Jayne isn't keen on anybody experiencing a bad Christmas. So she straps on her detecting cap and she and Sin start investigating.

A little winter elf magic, donuts that make Jayne swoon, present-buying, food-eating, and a fair amount of investigative leaps to get to the bottom of this potential holiday mishap. That said, this is a dangerous situation Jayne and Sin have stumbled into and it's going to take some quick thinking to get out of it unharmed. *thumbs up*

Thoughts on Sleigh Bells and Slaughter: Lilith is more of a Halloween lover and Luke is ALL IN for Christmas and SOMEHOW these two end up crossing paths. Actually, the somehow part comes from Lilith shilling her spooky Christmas wares at the Christmas market because a girl's gotta make enough money to pay the bills and all that. Truthfully, the path crossing came when Lilith's shed burned down at said Christmas market and Luke came to put out the flames.

The fact there was a dead body in her shed? Not great. But Lilith knows she didn't do it and the police force doesn't seem like they're going to investigate too deeply. So she sets out to figure out who offed the mean girl trying to relive her glory days. Not because she liked Patty, but because she's not keen on being blamed for something she didn't do.

Luke is also doing some sleuthing. Partly to make sure Lilith doesn't get blamed (because he liiiikes her), but also partly because he's a good guy who's good at his job.

More than a few suspects (because it turns out very few people liked Patty), secrets, lies, more secrets, a firefighter who likes to look on the bright side, and a lady who embraces her spooky side with everything inside her. But, yeah, maaaaayyyybe there's a little room for a sunshine-y firefighter in her life beside the spooky. Maybe.

Thoughts on An Unfinished Murder: We're back with the Medlar Three and change is in the air. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, mind you, but the comfortable relationship between Sara, Kate, and Jack is shifting into something different. And change can be hard even when it's good. Heck, it can be nerve-wracking even when it's working toward something all parties want.

So. Jack was away for a while and his return caused some unexpected physical reactions in Kate of the HOO-BOY variety. This thrills Sara and Kate's father, but Kate and Jack still have to work up to actually being together. Meanwhile, a fantastic old house has fallen into Kate's realtor lap and she's THRILLED with it because she has memories of the place from when she was a kid. However, on the first outing she dragged Sara, Jack, and Randal to, they find a body in the old nursery. Sara being Sara, she immediately starts plotting how they're going to investigate.

All that plotting results in the house being fixed up and decorated and the group of individuals who were present when the victim became deceased being invited to a party. And then things got complicated.

Because there are secrets and more secrets and family ties that are hidden. As it turns out, the Medlar Three (along with Randal and others) are smack-dab in the middle of it all.

A very nice conclusion to the overall series. We get answers and closure and enough HEAs to go around. *thumbs up*

Thoughts on A Rooftop Ransom: We're back with Meg and her crew at the Morrisey and our girl is taking some big steps. While telling Detective Anthony about her ability to see ghosts didn't go well (and kind of broke Meg's heart a little since she considered the detective an almost-friend), Meg has realized that hiding that big a part of herself isn't helping her. If someone can't handle her ability, it's really on them, not her. So the circle of people who know what she can do is getting bigger.

On top of that, Meg's complicated feelings about her father are finally addressed. Which is to say that Meg blurts out her fears to Wyatt and he admits that he's terrified he's going to mess things up with her. Which AWWWW. So, yeah, those two are finally talking and seem to have found their groove.

MEANWHILE, Laurie's cousin is using Meg's studio while he's in town and he's charming and lucky and somehow ends up in the middle of what could be a murder investigation. Which is how Meg's ability comes to light with him since there's no one better to help investigate a sticky death than a lady who can talk to ghosts. PLUS, Meg is working to help Jade (Ripley's ghostly foster sister) figure out the details of her death. Which is dangerous in its own right.

A charming cousin, a whole lot of spilled secrets, Laurie's unwavering support, a few new ghosts, and a lady who is right in the middle of it all. *thumbs up*

Thoughts on Murder on a Monday: I'm going to preface everything here by saying I don't care for present tense writing. It's a me-thing. Seriously. I own this. Present tense is so distracting for me that I can't focus on the actual events of the story. The fact this book was in present tense might have led to me not hand-waving plot points as I sometimes do when I'm more engaged in the story itself. Keep that in mind as you read this review.

So. The whole idea that this group of individuals whose only experience with solving crimes comes from watching mysteries on the big screen and then trying to figure out (often incorrectly) who did the deed AND they willingly removed crucial evidence from the scene of the crime just hit me wrong. These people barely seem to tolerate one another, but they thought they could work together and investigate better than the police?

This book is billed as being about found family, but I never got the feeling these people would spend time with one another outside their murder movie hobby (and while investigating an actual murder, I guess). They poke fun at one another, gossip like its going out of style, and are pretty darn critical. TO BE FAIR, that IS sort of like family, so maybe they are found family. I don't know.

The fact one of them removed evidence from a crime scene and everyone else just sort of went along with it was the breaking point for me. The reveal was less than satisfactory, but it very much might have been that I was already disengaged because of the whole present tense thing. Again, I own this. There are plenty of people who do enjoy present tense writing. I am not one of them. In the end, this book just wasn't for me.

Thoughts on Ogre on Patrol: Hedge witch Ellie has someone threatening her livelihood (and her beautiful plants) and the only investigator available at Monsters, PI is the ogre she was once engaged to. The one she hasn't spoken to since things turned sour in their relationship.

As it turns out, both she and Thain are laboring under some not-so-great misconceptions about the thing that happened that broke them up. Also as it turns out, the time apart has not dulled their attraction to one another. On top of that, Thain doesn't like that someone is vandalizing Ellie's business and threatening her. Let's just say their interactions are charged on a lot of levels and it doesn't take long before the truth comes out and the potential for continuing their previous relationship is very much in the cards.

Frenemies, angry former employees, a disapproving grandmother, a sign-waving almost-mob, a pup with good intuition,  an ogre who has never stopped loving his sexy hedge witch, and a lady who has to sort through what she believed happened all those years ago to get to the truth of the matter. *thumbs up*

Thoughts on Dragon Detective: The newest client Monsters, PI is taking on is Hannah who might (or might not) have a little problem with a ghost at the B&B she's renovating. It's also slightly possible it's not a ghost at all and someone is trying to drive her out of business before her business even gets off the ground. And that's why she now has a sexy dragon shifter shadowing her every move.

Now, Reylor doesn't believe in ghosts. So if ghosts aren't causing the mischief at the B&B, it has to be a person. A person who might escalate to more than just vandalism as time goes on. And that is NOT okay with Reylor. The vandalism isn't okay, either, but the thought Hannah might end up hurt (or worse) gets his dragony side all riled up. Not in a good way.

So now Hannah and Reylor are spending all sorts of time together. She's working on the B&B renovations and he's right by her side. On the downside, every time they think they have the culprit figured out, something new happens. There was A LOT Hannah was dealing with, tbh.

A little bodyguarding, more than a little vandalism, a ghost, a break in, a male who knows the lady he wants to show his hoard to when he meets her, and a lady who doesn't mind a hunky male helping around the house. In fact, she's more than willing to keep him around after the investigation ends. *thumbs up*

Thoughts on Ice Lord Incognito: Melly's dealing with a lot and the smokin' hot ice lord helping her clear her grandmother's name is a bit of a distraction. A good sort of distraction, but still a distraction. While the sparks between them are apparent, Elrik is also nursing a bit of a broken heart and isn't looking to dive into a new relationship. THAT SAID, he's VERY interested in the sweet human who is determined to figure out who really poisoned her grandmother's social club.

They do a little sleuthing and a little smoldering. Which is a little surprising for Elrik since he's, you know, an ice lord. But he likes Melly and if he's going to heat up for anyone, he's more than happy it's her.

On Melly's end, while her focus is on clearing her grandmother's name, she's not unhappy IN THE SLIGHEST to be spending time with the guy she can't stop thinking about. And if they happen to share a few kisses while investigating, she's FINE with that.

More than a few suspicious characters, a steamy encounter in the church's social room kitchen, a little icy magic, a male who is smitten the moment he lays eyes on his lady (although he ended up a little tongue tied at the time), and a lady who hasn't been able to stop thinking about her ice lord since their first meeting. *thumbs up*

Thoughts on The Retired Assassin's Guide to Country Gardening: I fully expected to enjoy this book (which is, you know, why I picked it up to read it), but I absolutely didn't expect to be so delighted by a retired assassin being forced to (gasp) begrudgingly interact with individuals PLUS use his (now retired) skills to help an absolute ray of sunshine beat a murder charge. Honestly, Dante was just fun. You know, for a guy who used to engage in wetworks and all. Throw in the folks around town who might or might not have just as colorful pasts as him (maybe not AS colorful, but there are definite shades of gray in more than one of the people Dante interacts with) and I was all in from the start.

So. Our erstwhile former assassin has chosen the small town of Te Kohe to enjoy his retirement in. Except, when a man has done what he did for a living, it's hard to let go. To find the rhythm of a non-assassin-y way of life. To not immediately assume anyone approaching him is a threat. But Dante is trying. He's going to his AA meetings (which are probably not what you think). He's learning the art of small-talk (he's not great at it, but he knows NOT small-talking makes him stand out and he really doesn't want that). He's trying his hand at gardening. Okay, he's leaving the actual gardening to Charlie, but he's REALLY good at making sure all the gardening implements are extremely sharp.

They he gets roped into helping one of the town bigwigs with security. And things go sort of downhill from there. Mostly because someone who is not Dante's client ends up deceased at the party Dante's running security on and he and his new sunshine gardener are the main suspects.

Dante knows he didn't do the deed and he's pretty sure Charlie didn't either. So when he's approached by a lady who is FAR more than she seems to help clear both his and Charlie's name, Dante grudgingly uses all his former skills to figure out who actually committed the crime. As an aside, it's a VERY BAD IDEA to catnap a former assassin's cat. Just saying.

A little subterfuge, a house that's been turned into a veritable fortress, a cat who chooses its person, ghosts, more ghosts, a gardener with a secret, a lady who is more than a match for anyone, and a retired assassin who's finding out it's hard to put the past behind you. Sort of. Let's just say that retiring and enjoying life is almost a full-time job in itself for Dante. *thumbs up*

Thoughts on Body at the Bakery: We're back in Nightmare and things are happening. Well, they're on the verge of happening. I mean, Baxter's been found and is safe, but he's an egg. Which sounds a little odd when you say it until you know he's a phoenix and this is part of his life cycle. Still Sanctuary is on hard-core egg watch and all the supernaturals are excited to know Baxter might be back in their midst (as a person, not an egg) soon.

Meanwhile, there are THINGS happening in town that Olivia and the Sanctuary crew need to look into. Namely the untimely demise of the man who owns several of the buildings around town. Throw in a couple fires that threaten the buildings that make Nightmare such a draw to the tourist crowd and things are even more complicated. After all, the Sanctuary Haunted House IS a historic building and those who call it home are a little worried it might be on the arsonist's hit list.

On top of all that, Damien has found some answers to his mother's mysterious disappearance and he and Olivia are working toward figuring out if they can find a way to bring her back.

Yeah, there's a lot going on and Olivia (along with the supernaturals and humans she's come to consider family) is right in the middle of it all. If this is where the series ends, I'm pretty darn satisfied. Then again, I won't say no to more in this world because it's FUN in Nightmare.

Thoughts on Four Leaf Felony: I feel like I need to give some backstory before I get into the meat of this review. This book didn't quite work for me, but I think it was me, not the book. See, I went from reading a couple of gloriously unhinged sci-fi horror books (the type that gave me nightmares) and needed something a LOT lighter. This is the book I went with and, yes, it was absolutely lighter, but it wasn't the best transitional piece between hardcore creeping horror and non-creeping horror.

So, yeah. It's me, not the book.

To be fair, I'm also not a fan of people being...I don't know how to put this. Like, malicious to others in a what they think is an amusing way? Yeah, that works. When Cherise filmed Violet for her eye in the sky segment with makeup running down her face, that's pretty much the opposite of funny to me. Which again, is a me thing.

But enough about me. Violet is the unfortunate individual who finds a dead body on a plane, the plane is rerouted to the small town of Holiday Junction where (oddly) both the victim and several other folks on the plane appear to be from. In an effort to speed up her delay in getting to California for a job interview (which her treatment by her potential boss is another thing that chapped my hide), Violet steps in to help investigate. Along the way, she uncovers some juicy Holiday Junction secrets and puts herself in a dangerous situation or two.

This wasn't a bad book, it was just the wrong book for me to read at the time.

Thoughts on Christmas in Branden Bay: Not going to lie, Becky seems to have a hard time saying No to people sometimes. In some instances this inability puts her in danger. This time? She gets roped into joining a Christmas choir just as her parents are coming home from their world tour.

While the timing isn't great, you'd otherwise think it's a pretty inconsequential thing to get pulled into. HA. Yeah, someone in the choir ends up dead and Becky's suddenly in the middle of another investigation. Seeing as how the woman who died was not universally loved by, well, anyone (except maybe her son), Becky has A LOT of people who could have done the deed. Not that the police believe foul play was necessarily involved, but once Becky gets an earful of the deceased's nightly singing, she knows she needs to figure things out.

On the upside, Bad Cop Brad might be possibly maybe coming around to believing that Becky can see (and talk to) ghosts. Or it might just have been his desire to close this particular case before his impending paternity leave. Only time will tell on that end.

While this book technically ends this series, Becky's ability has settled and is raring to go so there COULD be more ghostly shenanigans for her in the future. Plus, there's the thing with her parents. And H. I mean, I wouldn't mind reading more Becky and Connie cat as they put themselves in mortal danger and solve crime. Just saying.

Thoughts on Halloween in Branden Bay: Becky and H are trying the long distance thing after H's recent transfer to another police force. His job being what it is, H unfortunately has to back out of their date to the Halloween Ball. Which puts Becky in a funk, tbh. To complicate matters further, the local bad boy (who may or may not be a gangster) shows an inordinate interest in Becky and her dateless status. Given that Connor is a bit (a lot) of a womanizer AND the brother of H's most recent ex AND technically still married, he brings a lot to the table.

Then he gets shot on the steps to the castle and Becky gets winged and suddenly Becky's back in the middle of an investigation.

Becky, along with her trusty crew plus an extra or two, start looking for clues. Given Connor's love of women, the list of suspects is long and varied. There's the soon-to-be ex who will get everything if he dies before the divorce is finalized. There's the obsessed stalker and the former flame and the various and sundry significant others of his conquests. While the castle ghosts might have answers, getting them to talk is proving hard.

A ghost hunt or two, plenty of folks with a past, a speed bump in a relationship, and a complicated case for Becky to work through. *thumbs up*
